Acupuncture Point Shemen (CV5)
Location:
Lie supinely; draw a line connecting umbilicus and the midpoint of the upper margin of pubic bone, a spot on this line, 2/5 apart from umbilicus, or 3/5 apart from the midpoint of the upper margin of pubic bone.
Function:
Warming the kidney and dispelling cold, regualting menstruation and stopping leukorrhagia.
Regional Anatomy:
Skin-subcutaneous tissue-linea alba-transverse fascia-extraperitoneal fat tissue-parietal peritoneum.
In the superficial layer, there are the anterior cutaneous branches of the anterior branches of the 11th thoracic nerve and the tributaries of the superficial epigastric artery and vein.In the deep layer, there are the branches of the anterior branches of the 11th thoracic nerve.
Indications:
Abdominal pain, Diarrhea, Edema, hernia, anuria, enuresis, Amenorrhea, Leukorrhagia, metrorrhagia, and postpartum hemorrhage.
Prescription:
Combined use with Taichong (LR 3) Shu-Stream, Yuan-Source Point) for treatment of amenia; with Zhigou (TE6) for treatment of constipation; and with ShuifenCV9 (Shuifen (CV9)) for treatment of abdominal pain.
Methods:
Insert the needle perpendicularly to 0.5-1 cun depth; needling response: local numbness and distention, radiating downward; moxibustion: using 3-5 moxa-cones, or mild moxibustion for 10 min.
Note:
Deep under the point, the organs involved include the loop of small intestine and the sigmoid colon in the abdominal cavity.
