Edema, marked by swelling of the head, face, eyelids, limbs, abdomen and back, and even the whole body, is a morbid condition caused by invasion of pathogenic factors, improper diet, or overstrain which result in failure of the lungs to regulate the water passage, failure of the spleen to transport and transform body fluids, failure of the kidneys to regulate water metabolism, and failure of the urinary bladder to control urination, thus giving rise to abnormal fluid retention in the body and further involving the muscles and skin.
