Invasion of pathogenic wind, retention of noxious dampness, retention of water and dampness, improper diet, prolonged illness, stress and excessive sexual activities are considered as the main causes of edema. It usually occurs when the function of qi activity is impaired. In terms of viscera, the transportation and transformation of body fluids are related to the lungs, spleen and kidneys, but more closely to the kidneys.
Besides, if there exists blood stasis and the functioning of the triple energizers is impaired, edema will be obstinate and unresponsive to treatment. Edema may be seen in acute and chronic glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, congestive heart failure, endocrine disturbance and dystrophy in western medicine.
