Ingredients:
No. 1 Shenghuangqi (Radix Astragali seu Hedysari) 120 g;
No. 2 Dangguiwei (tail of Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 6 g;
No. 3 Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) 6 g;
No. 4 Dilong (Lumbricus) 3 g;
No. 5 Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong) 3 g;
No. 6 Honghua (Flos Carthami) 3 g;
No. 7 Taoren (Semen Persicae) 3 g.
Administration:
Decoct the above drugs in water for oral application.
Actions:
Invigorating qi, promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis from the meridians.
Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for sequelae of apoplexy, marked by hemiplegia, deviation of the eyes and mouth, involuntary drooling, frequent micturation or enuresis, deep-red tongue with thin whitish fur, and slow pulse. It is applicable to hemiplegia, paraplegia, and atrophy of the upper or lower limbs from sequelae of cerebrovascular accident or other reasons, which pertain to blood stasis due to qi deficiency. In case of excessive phlegm, add Zhibanxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Praeparatae) and Tianzhuhuang (Concretio Silicea Bambusae to dissolve phlegm.
If concomitant with intricate and obscure speech, add Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Graminei), Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae ) and Fanyujin ( Radix Curcumae) to restore consciousness and remove obstruction from collaterals. In case of deficient yang with aversion to cold and cold extremities, add Shufuzi (Radix Aconiti Praeparatae) to warm yang and dispel cold. In case of paralysis of the lower extremities, add Duzhong (Cortex Eucommiae ) and Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae) to reinforce the liver and kidney and strengthen tendons and bones.
Elucidation:
The syndrome arises when qi fails, due to deficiency, to promote the circulation of blood so that blood stasis occurs and tendons and muscles are in a state of malnutrition. This should be treated by supplementing qi, promoting blood flow and removing blood stasis from collaterals. Ingredient No. 1 in large dosage is used as monarch drug, which can replenish healthy qi so as to promote blood flow. No. 2 acts as minister drug, which can promote blood circulation and remove stasis from collaterals. No. 3, No. 5, No. 7 and No. 6 promote the effect of the minister drug, and No. 4 has the function of removing blood stasis from collaterals, all functioning as adjuvant drugs.
Cautions:
The usual dosage for No. 1 is 30 - 60 g, which should be increased gradually if there is no marked effect. It should be taken continuously for a certain period of time after recovery so as to consolidate the therapeutic effect and prevent recurrence.
