Ingredients:
No. 1 Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) 15 g:
No. 2 Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis) 9 g;
No. 3 Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 9 g;
No. 4 Honghua (Flos Carthami) 6 g;
No. 5 Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 6 g
No. 6 Chuanshanjia (Squama Manitis) (roasted) 6 g;
No. 7 Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) (prepared with wine) 30 g;
No.8 Taoren (Semen Persicae) (soaked in wine)9 g.

Administration:
Grind the above drugs into coarse powder; decoct 30 g of it with 30ml millet wine in water for oral application.

Actions:
Promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis, dispersing stagnated liver-qi to remove obstruction in the meridians.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for blood stasis in hypochondriac region with unbearable pain due to injuries from falls, fractures, contusions and strains. It is applicable to chest and hypochondriac pain as seen in intercostal neuralgia and costal chondritis, which pertain to blood stasis and qi stagnation. In case of severe distension and pain due to qi stagnation, add Xiangfu (Rhizoma Gyperi) and Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride) to promote flow of qi and relieve pain. In case of severe swelling and pain due to blood stasis, take orally the powder of Shensanqi (Radix Notoginseng), or add Ruxiang (Olibanum) and Moyao (Myrrha) to enhance the effect of removing blood stasis and relieving pain.
 
Elucidation:
This syndrome is caused by trauma, which impairs the vessels and leads blood to flow outside the vessels and to retain in the chest and hypochondriac region. It should be treated by promoting blood circulation and dispersing the stagnated liver-qi to remove blood stasis and obstruction in the meridians. Ingredient No. 7 can remove blood stasis and lead pathogenic factors downward, and No. 1 regulate the flow of qi and guide other drugs to the liver meridian, both acting as monarch drugs. No. 3, No. 4 and No. 8 are used as minister drugs, which promote the circulation of blood to remove blood stasis and relieve swelling and pain.

No.6 has the function of removing blood stasis and obstruction in the collaterals, while No. 2 possesses the effect of clearing away heat from xuefen, removing heat accumulation and relieving swelling, both functioning as adjuvant drugs. No. 5 serves as guiding drug to mediate properties of other drugs. The wine added while drugs are decocted can strengthen the effect of promoting blood circulation and removing obstruction from collaterals.

Both this recipe and Xuefu Zhuyu Tang are used to treat swelling and pain of the chest and hypochondriac region. The former, with Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) and Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) acting as monarch drugs, focuses on removing blood stasis in the hypochondriac region and includes such drugs capable of promoting blood flow and dealing with trauma as Chuanshanjia (Squama Manitis) and Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis). Thus, it is mainly applied in chest and hypochondriac pain as the result of falls, fractures, contusions and strains. The latter, however, has a mild efficacy in removing blood stasis because it is composed of drugs capable of removing blood stasis, such as Taoren (Semen Persicae) and Honghua (Flos Carthami), and those of promoting the flow of qi. Thus it is widely used in syndrome of blood stasis and qi stagnation occurring in the chest and hypochondriac region as well as other locations of diseases.
