Ingredients:
No. 1 Renshen (Radix Ginseng) 18 g;
No. 2 Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 18 g;
No. 3 Chaobaizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae Praeparatae) 18 g;
No. 4 Roudoukou (Semen Myristicae) 15 g;
No. 5 Rougui (Cortex Cinnamomi) 24 g;
No. 6 Zhigancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparatae) 24g;
No. 7 Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) 48 g;
No. 8 Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae) 42 g;
No. 9 Hezi (Fructus Chebulae) 36 g;
No. 10 Yingsuke (Pericarpium Papaveris) 108g.
Administration:
Grind the above drugs into powder and decoct 6-12 g each time in water for oral application.
Actions:
Astringing the intestines to stop diarrhea and warming the middle-energizer and reinforcing the spleen.
Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for syndrome due to deficiency cold of the spleen and stomach and failure of the intestine to astringe, marked by protracted diarrhea or dysentery occurring irregularly day and night, abdominal pain with preference for warmth and pressure, lassitude, poor appetite, pale tongue with whitish fur, thready and slow pulse. It is applicable to longstanding cases of chronic or allergic colitis and others, which belong to weakness of the middle energizer. In case of severe aversion to cold with cold limbs, add Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Praeparatae) and Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis) to strengthen the effect of warming the spleen-yang. In case of marked tenesmic sensation in rectum or prolapse of rectum, add Huangqi (Radix Astragali seu Hedysari) and Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) to supplement qi and lift up the spleen-yang.
Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by impairment of the spleen-yang and failure of the intestine in astringent effect as the result of protracted diarrhea or dysentery. It should be treated by consolidating the intestines to relieve diarrhea and warming the middle energizer and invigorating the spleen. The last ingredient is monarch drug, in larger dosage and with the effect of consolidating the intestines and relieving diarrhea. Ingredients No. 9 and No. 4 help bring about the effect of the monarch drug on the one hand, and warm the middle-energizer on the other, acting as minister drugs.
Ingredients No. 1 and No. 3 can invigorate qi and the spleen, No. 2 and No. 7 can nourish and regulate the flow of blood as well as relieve pain; No. 5 can warm the kidney and spleen, and No. 8 can regulate the flow of qi and activate the spleen, preventing qi stagnation possibly induced by tonic and astringent drugs. These six ingredients together play the role of adjuvant drug. Combined with No. 1 and No. 3, ingredient No. 6 can achieve the effects of invigorating the middle-energizer and supplementing qi, and relieving spasm in combination with No. 7. Besides it also mediates the efficacy of other ingredients and serves as guiding drug.
Cautions:
It is contraindicated for the early stage of diarrhea or dysentery, when the accumulation of damp heat is not yet removed.
