Clinic Application:
This recipe is indicated for syndrome of exterior cold with interior dampness occurring in summer days, marked by aversion to cold, fever without perspiration, headache, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, chest distress, fatigue, greasy whitish fur, and superficial pulse. It is applicable to common cold and acute gastroenteritis occurring in summer and others, which are marked by aversion to cold without perspiration, headache, heavy sensation of body, chest distress, greasy tongue fur and pertain to external cold and internal dampness.

In case of accompanying interior accumulation of summer-heat manifesting thirst, flushed cheeks, superficial and rapid pulse, add Jinyinhua (Flos Lonicerae) and Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae) to clear away summer-heat, which forms another recipe entitled Xinjia Xiangru Yin. In case of serious pathogenic dampness with borborygmus and diarrhea, add Fuling (Poria), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) to reinforce the spleen and eliminate dampness.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by staying in a cool place or having cold drinks in summer, resulting in attack on superficies by cold, stagnated interstitial space, internal impairment due to dampness, and disharmony between the spleen and stomach. It should be treated by relieving exterior syndrome and dispelling cold, and by removing dampness to restore normal function of the middle-energizer. Ingredient No. 1 acted as monarch drug can induce sweat and dispel cold, relieve the exterior syndrome and remove dampness, playing the part of monarch drug.

Ingredient No. 3 has the function of promoting qi flow to relieve flatulence, eliminating dampness retention and smoothing the middle energizer, acting as minister drug. Ingredient No. 2, capable of reinforcing the spleen to restore normal function of the middle-energizer and eliminating dampness and summer-heat, is used as adjuvant drug. The small amount of liquor used in decoction is supposed to enhance the effect of expelling cold and activating the meridians.

Cautions:
This recipe, which is pungent, warm, bitter and dry, possesses a drastic effect of inducing perspiration. Therefore it is contraindicated for perspiring patients with exterior syndrome due to exogenous wind-cold in summer.
