Those that bear mediating or regulating action and are applied to febrile diseases caused by pathogenic factors in Shaoyang, disharmony between the liver and spleen, intermingling of cold and heat, and coexistent syndrome of both exterior and interior, are known as prescriptions for mediation.
These prescriptions have a wide range of application and, therefore, are subdivided into four classes in accordance with the location of the chief syndromes which these prescriptions treat. They are prescriptions for mediating shaoyang, those for regulating the liver and spleen, those for harmonizing cold and heat syndrome, and those for expelling both exterior and interior pathogenic factors.
Prescriptions for mediating shaoyang are chiefly made up of drugs with the function of mediating the shaoyang meridian. They are used for syndromes of exogenous pathogenic factors in shaoyang. Prescriptions for regulating the liver and spleen are mainly composed of drugs with the function of relieving stagnated liver-qi and invigorating the spleen. They are used for syndromes of attack of the spleen due to depression of the liver and disharmony between the liver and spleen. Prescriptions for harmonizing cold and heat syndrome comprise drugs of pungent and hot nature and drugs of bitter flavor respectively.
They possess the effects of subduing pathogenic cold and heat, and relieving stagnation and flatulence and are used to treat simultaneous occurrence of cold and heat syndromes as well as functional disorder of qi. Prescriptions for expelling both exterior and interior pathogenic factors consist of diaphoresis in compatibility with drugs for relieving interior syndrome and are fit for the syndrome with both exterior and interior pathogenic factors.
Prescriptions for mediation should be applied with care to differentiate what is primary from what is secondary between zang and fu organs, as well as the exterior and the interior. And the proportion of drugs should be weighed carefully to avoid overdose or inadequate dose.
