Acupuncture & Moxibustion for apoplexy

(1) Hemiplegia: To harmonize meridian and promote flow of qi and blood. The main acupuncture parts are acupoints on the stomach meridian and auxiliary parts are acupoints on the bladder and gall bladder meridian. Acupoints selected: Upper limbs: Jianyu (LI15), Quchi (LI 11), Waiguan (SJ5), Hegu (LI 4), Jianliao (SJ14), Jianzhen (SI9), Binao (LI14), Yangchi (SJ4). Lower limbs: Huantiao (GB30), Yanglingquan (GB34), Zusanli (ST36), Kunlun (BL60), Fengshi (GB31), Juegu (GB39), Yaoyangguan (DU3). For hemiplegia belong to apoplexy involving the channels in the early stage, twelve needles of hands and feet can be applied to acupuncture, i.e. bilateral Quchi (LI 11), Neiguan (PC6), Hegu (LI 4), Yanglingquan (GB34), Zusanli (ST 36), Sanyinjiao (SP6). For hemiplegia from apoplexy sequelae, twelve penetrating acupoints on the hands and feet can be strongly acupunctured by 2-3 cun long needles. These twelve penetrating acupoints are: Jianyu penetrate Binao, Yefeng penetrate Jiafeng, Quchi penetrate Shaohai, Waiguan penetrate Neiguan, Yangchi penetrate Daling, Hegu penetrate Laogong, Huantiao penetrate Fengshi, Yangguan penetrate Ququan, Yanglingquan penetrate Yinlingquan, Juegu penetrate Sanyinjiao, Kunlun penetrate Taixi, Taichong penetrate Yongquan.

(2) Aphasia due to apoplexy: Acupoints selected: Neiguan (PC6), Tongli (RN23), Lianquan (H5), Sanyinjiao (SP6). Acupuncturing these selected acupoints can dispel wind and eliminate phlegm, remove obstruction in collaterals.

(3) Body Acupuncture     
Acupoints Selected: Baihui (GV 20), Hegu (LI 4) and Taichong (LR 3).     
Modification: For paralysis of upper limbs, Jianyu (LI 15), Quchi (LI 11), Shousanli (LI 10) and Waiguan (TE 15) are added; for paralysis of lower limbs, Huantiao (GB 30 ), Zusanli (ST 36 ), Yanglingquan ( GB 34 ), Fenglong (ST 40), Xuanzhong (GB 39) and Kunlun (BL 60) are added; for distortion of face, Jiache (ST 6), Dicang (ST 4), Yangbai (GB 14), Cuanzhu (BL 2) are added; for stiffness of tongue, Lianquan (CV 23) and Tongli (HT 5) are added; for difficulty in swallowing, Lianquan (CV 23) and Fengchi (GB 20) are added.     
 
Performance: The acupoints are selected and needled according to the pathological conditions. Usually mild reinforcing and reducing needling techniques are used. The acupoints on the four limbs is needled with the addition of moxibustion. Jiache (ST 6) and Dicang (ST 4) are needled with the needles pointing to each other. Lianquan (CV 23) is needled with the needle pointing to the root of the tongue. Fengchi (GB 20) is needled with rotating and twirling manipulations.    

(4) Scalp Acupuncture     
Acupoints Selected: Motor zone, sensory zone, zone of pedal movement and sensation and lingual zone on the opposite side.    
Performance: The needles are inserted 0.5 - 1 cun with intermittent manipulation. The needles are retained for 30 minutes. Impulse current can be attached to the needles with moderate and strong stimulation for 30 minutes.

(5) Acupoints Selected: Fengchi (GB 20), Tongli (HT 5), Jinjin (EX- HN 12), and Yuye (EX - HN 13). Shuigou (GV 26) and Neiguan (PC 6) are added if there is coma. Fenglong (ST 40) is added if the disease is caused by phlegm-turbidity congestion. Xuehai (SP 10) and Ganshu (BL 18) are added if it results from severe blood stasis. Baihui (GV 20) and Taichong (LR 3) are added if it is due to hyperactivity of liver-yang. Zhongwan (CV 12) and Zusanli (ST 36) are added if there is qi asthenia. Shenshu (BL 23) and Taixi (KI 3) are added if there is asthenia of kidney.
Action: Dredging the circulation of qi and blood, clearing the heart to arouse the brain as well as strengthening healthy qi to wake up the patient from unconsciousness.
