(1) Herbal Therapy
1) Internal Medicine
Wind-cold attacking the Lung:
Therapeutic Methods: To disperse wind, expel cold, release lung qi and stop cough.
Prescription: Modified Zhisou San (Powder for Relieving Cough) and San'ao Tang (Three Crude-Drug Decoction), composed.

Wind-heat attacking the Lung:
Therapeutic Methods: To dispel wind, clear away heat, release lung qi and resolve phlegm.
Prescription: Modified Sang Ju Yin (Mori and Chrysanthemi Decoction).

Warm-dryness attacking the Lung:
Therapeutic Methods: To dispel wind, clear away lung heat, moisten the lung and stop cough.
Prescription: Modified Sang Xing Tang (Mori and Armaniacae Decoction),

Cool-dryness attacking the Lung: Therapeutic Methods: To dispel wind and cold, moisten the lung and stop cough.
Prescription: Modified Xingsu San (Powder of Armeniacae Amarum and Perillae),

Retention of Phlegm-dampness in the Lung:
Therapeutic Methods: To invigorate the spleen, dry dampness, resolve phlegm and stop cough.
Prescription: Modified Erchen Tang (Erchen Decoction) and Sanzi Yangqin Tang (Decoction of Perillae, Sinapis and Coicis).

Accumulation of Phlegm-heat in the Lung:
Therapeutic Methods: To clear away heat, resolve phlegm, release lung qi and stop cough.
Prescription: Modified Qingjin Huantan Tang

Liver Fire Attacking the Lung:
Therapeutic Methods: To clear away lung heat, soothe the liver, lower qi and purge fire.
Prescription: Modified Xiebai San (Powder for clearing away Lung Heat) and Dai Ge San (Powder of Indigo Naturalis and Concha Meretricis seu Cyclinae).

Deficiency of Lung Qi:
Therapeutic Methods: To replenish lung qi, resolve phlegm and stop cough.
Prescription: Modified Bufei Tang (Decoction for Replenishing Lung Qi).

Consumption of Lung Yin:
Therapeutic Methods: To nourish yin, moisten the lung, stop cough and resolve phlegm.
Prescription: Modified Shashen Maidong Tang (Glehniae and Ophiopogonis Decoction).

2) External Medicine
a. Herba Ephedrae (Mahuang)12 g, Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) 10 g, Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao) 20 g, Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus ) 6 g, Ziwan (Radix Asteris ) 8 g and Zisuye (Folium Perillae) 20 g. Pulverize the drugs, mix the powder with sesame oil or with vaseline and make it into an ointment. Apply cupping or point pricking therapy on the selected acupoints first and then cover the ointment on these points and fix the ointment with gauze and adhesive plaster. Points used are Feishu (BL 13), Tanzhong (CV 17), Dazhui (GV 14) and Quchi (LI 11). For wind-cold cough, add Jianjing (GB 21) and Chengshan (GB 57); for wind-heat cough, add Zhongfu (LU 1) and Zhongwan (CV 12).

b. Baijiezi (Semen Sinapis): Stir-bake it until it turns crisp, then pulverize it, mix the fine powder with warm water or ginger juice, stir the mixture into paste. Apply the paste on Tanzhong (CV 17), Dazhui (GV 14), Feishu (BL 13) and Yongquan (KI 1), etc., cover the paste with foil paper, and fix with gauze and adhesive plaster. Remove the paste as soon as a burning sensation and blisters occur. Do not break the blisters. This treatment may be used once daily, 7 days as a treatment course, applicable to wind-cold and chronic cough.

c. Dilong (Pheretima) Extract (1: 1) and Congbai (Bulbus Allii Fistulosi) Extract (1: 1). Take 8 ml of each extract and mix them in a dropping bottle. This may be used for nasal drip, 1 - 3 drops each time, 10 – 30 times daily with 10 days as a treatment course and 2 – 3 consecutive courses are recommended. It is applicable to persistent cough.

(2) Massage Therapy
Points selected: Feishu (BL 13), Chize (LU5), Lieque (LU7), Taiyuan (LU9), Sanyinjiao (SP6), Fengmen (BL 12), Dazhui (GV4) and Dingchuan (EX - B 1)
Manipulation: Press each point for 3-5 minutes each time till a sore and swelling sensation is gained; take it 2-3 times a day.

(3) Guasha Therapy
1) Scrape Dazhui (GV4), Fengmen( BL 12)), Chize (LU5) and Feishu (BL 13).
2) Scrape the governor meridian on the back and the bladder meridians.
3) Pay attention to scrape gently for the sore and swelling sensation instead of the purple color of the skin.

(4) Cupping Therapy
Points selected: Feishu (BL 13), Dazhui (GV4), Chize (LU5), Fenglong (S 40), Dingchuan (EX - B 1), Fengmen (BL 12), Tianzhu (BL 10), Danzhong (CV17), bladder meridians, governor vessel, stomach meridian, lung meridian and conception vessel.

Method:
1) The patients should keep a sitting or supine or prostrate position and keep the cup sucked in place for 10-15 minutes; take it every 3-4 days.
2) The patients should keep a prostrate or supine position and apply moderate lube on the back; keep the cups sucked on the back with the flashing-fire method and then move the cup come-and-do on the selected points along the bladder meridians and governor vessel till the amaranth blood stasis is gained on the skin; take it once a week and scrape 2-3 vessels each time.
