(1) Exogenous Cough
1) Wind-cold attacking the Lung
Chief Manifestations: Hoarse cough with thin and white sputum, itching throat, nasal obstruction and discharge, or accompanied by headache, general aching, aversion to cold, fever, no sweating, sore limbs, thin and white tongue coating, and superficial and tense pulse.
2) Wind-heat attacking the Lung
Chief Manifestations: Hoarse cough with white or yellow sputum, dry and sore throat, or cough with hoarse voice, or fever, slight aversion to wind and cold, yellow nasal discharge, thirst, headache, red tongue tip, thin and yellow coating, and superficial and rapid pulse. 3) Warm-dryness attacking the Lung
Chief Manifestations: Cough with little sputum which is difficult to expectorate, dry and sore throat, dry nose and mouth, red tongue tip, thin and yellow tongue coating with little moisture, thready and rapid pulse.
Cool-dryness attacking the Lung
4) Chief Manifestations: Cough with little or no sputum, itching throat, dry nose and lips, headache, aversion to cold, fever, no sweating, thin, white and dry tongue coating, and superficial and tense pulse.
(2) Endogenous Cough
1) Retention of Phlegm-dampness in the Lung
Chief Manifestations: Cough with muffled sound, profuse white sticky sputum, or thick sputum in lumps, which is aggravated in the morning or after intake of sweet and greasy food, distending sensation in the chest and abdomen, nausea, poor appetite, lassitude, white and greasy tongue coating, and soft-superficial and smooth pulse.
2) Accumulation of Phlegm-heat in the Lung
Chief Manifestations: Cough with hoarse breath, profuse sputum which is sticky and yellow or hot and stinking, or blood-stained and difficult expectoration, distending sensation in the chest and hypochondrium, chest pain induced by cough, flushed face, fever, dry mouth with a desire to drink, red tongue with yellow and greasy coating, and smooth and rapid pulse.
3) Liver Fire Attacking the Lung
Chief Manifestations: Paroxysmal irritable cough with pain in hypochondriac region, flushed face, conjunctivae congestion, dry throat, restlessness, bitter mouth, feeling of the throat obstructed by phlegm which is scanty and sticky and difficult to expectorate, thin and yellow tongue coating with little moisture, and wiry and rapid pulse. 4) Deficiency of Lung Qi
Chief Manifestations: Long-standing cough with low sound and asthmatic breathing, white and thin sputum, poor appetite, shortness of breath, feeling of oppression in the chest, tiredness, spontaneous sweating, aversion to cold, pale and tender tongue with white coating, and thready and weak pulse.
5) Consumption of Lung Yin
Chief Manifestations: General dryness, cough in short bursts with sticky and scanty white sputum, or blood-stained sputum, dry mouth and throat, feverish sensation in the palms and soles, night sweating, red tongue with little coating, and thready and rapid pulse.
