Tuina of traditional Chinese Medicine is famous for its long history, numerous schools, rich and varied manipulations, high skills, broad indications and outstanding therapeutic effects. More than 200 Tuina manipulations are described in this book, but more manipulations prevail among the people and in the clinical practice. Various manipulations provide ample selective use for Tuina treatment, but on the other hand make some difficulties in learning them. Therefore, on the basis of revealing the internal relationship and evolution rule of Manipulations, scientific classification of them will be helpful in improving the theoretical system of Tuina manipulations, understanding their general and specific rules, and thus enhancing students’ability in learning, mastering, and applying them to the clinical practice. Although the manipulations are numerous, they can be classi- fied into 2 major categories according to the acting patterns of their external forces, i. e. "An" and "Qiao" recorded in the earliest, systematic Chinese medical classic Inner classic. "An" means to restrain and press skin and muscle while "Qiao" means to move the limbs (including hands and feet ) quickly in the light of Wang Bing's annotations of the Tang Dynasty. The former acts directly on local tissues which are touched by the manipulator's hand, while the later works indirectly and is transmitted to the distant joints, muscles, tendons and so on.Each major category can be sub-divided into some sub-categories too according to their motion features. And each sub-category contains several elementary manipulations. Click to learn Chinese medicine Treatment for Cervicitis.
Moreover, according to their touching parts and motion changes, each elementary manipulation can be sub-divided into some varieties. Besides, the manipulations can also be classified according to their main acting ways into mechanical stimulation manipulations and mechanical effect manipulations. See Fig.1 for the relationships among various manipulations. On the basis of studying our predecessors’ and overseas ideas of classification of manipulations, we put forward a perfect system of classification to consult with Tuina practitioners at both home and abroad.
