Gastroptosis refers to the condition when the lowest point of the lesser curvature of stomach is below the iliac crest line. The condition
is clinically manifested by poor appetite, distended discomfort in the
stomach, symptoms aggravated after meal, emaciation, lassitude, frequent epigastric and abdominal dull pain. The symptoms may also be accompanied by belching and acid regurgitation. This disease belongs to the scope of "abdominal distention" classified in traditional Chinese medicine, and it is mostly caused by weakness of the spleen and stomach and the sinking of qi of the middle Jiao (triple energizer). The treatment principle is to tonify qi of the middle Jiao (triple energizer), to strengthen the spleen and harmonize the stomach. Points chosen are mainly the Back-shu and Front-mu points of the stomach, and the points of the stomach meridian of Foot Yangming, such as Baihui(Ren 20), Zhongwan (Ren 12), Pishu (BL20), Weishu (BL21), Zusanli (ST 36) and Qihai (Ren 6). Moxibustion is usually applied in the treatment.
