Melancholia manifests itself as emotional depression, emotional anxiety, distending pain in the hypochondrium, excessive mental activity, worry, liability to anger or crying, foreign body sensation choking in the throat and insomnia. The disease is mainly caused by suppressed anger damaging the liver leading to liver qi stagnation and a traverse attack on the spleen by the liver. Alternatively, it is caused by liver stagnation transformed into fire that brings up liver fire attacking stomach; when excessive mental activity damages the spleen, causing its failure in transportation and transformation which in turn generates phlegm and damp in the interior, leading to phlegm and qi accumulating above the diaphragm in the chest; when overstrain, stress and excessive thinking damage both the heart and spleen and lead to deficiency of qi and blood; or when there is the dysfunction of yin, yang, qi and blood of zangfu organs. The treatment principle is to sooth the liver, remove liver stagnation, strengthen the spleen, resolve phlegm and tonify qi and blood. The points of the Hand and Foot Jueyin, Foot Taiyin and points of Conception Vessel are taken as the main ones, such as Tanzhong (CV17), Neiguan (PC6), Shenmen (HT 7), Xinshu (BL15), Fenglong (ST 40), Sanyinjiao (SP6) and Taichong (LR 3). Neurasthenia, hysteria and menopausal syndrome as diagnosed by Western medicine can be classified into this disease category.
