It is believed in traditional Chinese medicine that the disease originates in the fetus, when the pregnant women is suddenly frightened, the fear interrupting the development of fetus, or that fear, fright and repressed anger cause the stagnation of liver qi, which further induces the dysfunction of the spleen in transportation and transformation, ultimately producing phlegm damp from the interior, so that qi and fire bring up the phlegm and travel in the meridians collaterals and mist up the clear orifice. Clinically, it can be divided into deficient and excessive types. The excessive type manifests itself as sudden falling in a faint, loss of consciousness, lock jaw, frothy mouth, opisthotonus, severe convulsion, making roaring sounds, incontinence of urine and stool. The deficient type manifests itself as chronic epilepsy with repeated attacks, decreased severity of convulsion, low spirits, lassitude, weakness, soreness and weakness in the lower back and knees. The treatment for the excessive type is to calm the internal part of the body, heart and resolve the phlegm. Points relieve epilepsy, ranquilize the selected include Baihui (GV 20), Fengfu (GV16), Neiguan (PC6), Taichong (LR3), Shenzhu (GV 12), Benshen (GB13) and Jiuwei (Ren 15). The treatment to the deficient type is to tonify the heart and spleen, resolve phlegm and calm down the mind. Points selected are Tongli (HT5), Yanglingquan (GB34), Fenglong (ST 40), Sanyinjiao (SP6), Jinsuo (GV 8) and Shenshu (BL23). The reinforcing needling technique can be used, and moxibustion can be combined.
