1. Regulating the emotions
Those with visual disabilities are susceptible to negative emotions like tension, impetuosity, depression and pessimism. It is advisable to adopt the methods of straightening them out, checking one emotion with another and suggestion therapy so as to remove bad emotional reactions. They may also use the recreational methods like music, singing and drama to make themselves cheerful. This can stabilize their emotions and improve their life quality.
2. Training the body
Daoyin: Close the eyes and aim at the eyes with the palms in turn. Namely, the right palm aims at the right eye first. Then, imagine that a bright light is penetrating into the eyeball from the palm center. The left hand repeats the same movements. Do the daoyin with the alternating hands for 7 to 8 minutes, but no more than 10 minutes in general. Afterwards, "wipe the eyes with the fingers" . If there exist mild nsations like soreness, numbness and itching in the eyes, these are normal reactions.
Practice eight-section brocade or Taijiquan everyday. Generally, the simplified Taijiquan is advisable. People with better physical strength may select the forty-eight-section Taijiquan or Yang's Taijiquan.
3. Rehabilitation with the diets
Generally people with visual disabilities mostly select sight-improving foods like Baihe (Bulbus Lilii), Juhua (Flos Chrysanthemi) and animal livers.
(1) Wolfberry Vegetable
Wolfberry vegetable, also called "Gouqitou", "Gouqimiao" and "Gouqiye" in Chinese, is the tender leaf of wolfberry. The leaf can be used to stir-fry dishes, make tea, cook gruel and thick soup. Wolfberry is bitter and sweet, cool-natured and acts upon the liver meridian and kidney meridian. It has the actions of clearing away heat, curing deficiency, nourishing the liver and improving sight. The drug is applicable to declining sight, night blindness, etc. It is advisable to decoct 60g of wolfberry leaves, 30g of Juemingzi (Semen Cassiae), 9g of Yemingsha (Faeces Vespertilionis), 120g of pork liver together. (2) Abalone
Abalone, also called "Jiukongbao" and "Fuyu'', is salty and warm-natured, acting upon the liver meridian. It nourishes blood, liver and yin, clears away heat, benefits essence and improves sight. The fish contains protein and over 20 nutritious constituents like amino acid as well as Baolingsu and Baolingsu. These substances can inhibit cancer cells, streptomycin, staphylococci, flu viruses, simple herpes viruses, keratitis viruses, type 12 adenovirus, etc. The meat can be made into dried abalone for food. (3) Carrot
Carrot is sweet and neutral-natured. It benefits qi and produces blood, strengthens the stomach to remove food retention, improves sight and nourishes the liver. It is advisable to eat for those who have poor sight.
(4) Gouqizi Wine (Wine of Fructus Lycii)
When brewing rice wine at home, put a proper amount of Gouqizi (Fructus Lycii) (1/10 of the rice) into the round-grained nonglutinous rice. After the wine is brewed, drink 20ml of the wine when having supper or at bed time every day. The wine is applicable to declining sight and blurred vision due to blood deficiency of the liver. (5) Wolfberry Leaves Stewed with Pig Kidney
Add a proper amount of water to 100 to 150g of wolfberry leaves and a pair of pig kidneys (remove the fasciae, wash them clean and cut them into small cubes) to cook soup. Then add some seasoning to eat the meat. The dish has the actions of strengthening the kidney and benefiting essence, improving hearing and sight. (6) Wolfberry Stewed with Beef
The diet includes 250g of meat of cattle leg, 10g of Huaishanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae), 20g of Gouqizi (Fructus Lycii), 6g of Guiyuanrou (Arillus Longan), a proper amount of cooking wine, refined salt, gourmet powder, segments of green Chinese onion, slices of ginger and edible oil respectively. First, wash the Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae), Gouqizi (Fructus Lycii) and Guiyuanrou (Arillus Longan) clean and put them into a handleless cup. After washing the meat clean, cut it into the chips with a diameter of 4 cm. Thirdly, heat the iron pot until it is hot. Fourthly, pour the peanut oil into the pot. Fifthly, pour the beef chips into the pot and fry them quickly with strong fire. Sixthly, boil the cooking wine and put it into the cup with the ginger and green Chinese onion on it. Seventhly, pour boiling water and salt into the cup. Then, put the cup on the water and heat it until the beef is very tender. At this time, take out the meat and remove the ginger and green Chinese onion.
Finally, add the gourmet powder to the meat. The whole cooking process is finished. The meat has the actions of strengthening the kidney to benefit essence, invigorating qi and blood, nourishing the liver to improve sight. It is applicable to blurred vision due to deficiency of qi and blood resulting from insufficiency of the liver and kidney. (7) Shouwu (Radix Polygoni Multiflori) Stewed with Liver Chips
The ingredients are 250g of pig liver, 10g of Heshouwu (Radix Polygoni Multiflori), 75g of edible fungus (fermented in water), 50g of green vegetable, 25g of soya sauce, 10g of cooking wine, 1g of gourmet powder, 15g of water starch, 5g of green Chinese onion, 5g of ginger and a proper amount of water. First, cut Heshouwu (Radix Polygoni Multiflori) into chips. And cook the drug in water to extract 100ml of the concentrated liquid of Heshouwu (Radix Polygoni Multiflori). Secondly, cut the pig liver into chips with the shape of a willow leaf, the green Chinese onion into slivers and the ginger into slices. Thirdly, Cut the edible fungus and green vegetable into slices after washing them clean and scald the two ingredients in boiling water for a little while. Fourthly, extract the juice of the edible fungus, green vegetable, slivers of green Chinese onion, ginger slices, soya sauce, cooking wine, gourmet powder, salt, vinegar, and water starch. Use the juice and a proper amount of soup to make starch juice. Fifthly, put vegetable oil into a pot and heat the pot until the oil is 70 %--80% done. Seventhly, dip the liver in the oil in the pot until it is completely done. Eighthly, Place the cooked liver in a strainer, leave the oil in the pot. (1) The prescription is composed of 150g of Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata), 60g of Shanyurou (Fructus Corni), 30g Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis), 45g of Mudanpi (Cortex Mouttan Radics), 60g of Fuling (Poria) (wood removed), 90g of Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae), 60g of Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), 30g of Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong), 90g of Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis) (core removed) and 90g of Shihu (Herba Dendrobii). Take the pill with boiling water, 9g each time. The prescription nourishes yin and enriches blood, nourishes liver and improves sight. It is applicable to photophobia, wind-induced lacrimation and blurred vision due to yin deficiency of the liver and kidney. The prescription is composed of 120g of sesame, 120g of Qiushi (Halitum Praeparatum), 120g of Heshouwu (Radix Polygoni Multiflori), 120g of Baifuling (Poria) and 30g of Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae). Grind all the above ingredients into fine powder and make it into pills with the size of a Chinese parasol seed with 500g of honey. Take the pills with rice wine, 5g each time, three times a day. The prescription has the actions of blackening the hair and beard, improving hearing and sight, preserving health and prolonging life.
