Syndrome differentiation and treatment
In clinic, the disease is classified into the syndromes qi, accumulation of endogenous phlegm-heat and hemorrhage due to blood heat. The treatment, therefore, should respectively consist of the nourishing, phlegm removing and blood-cooling methods.
1. Syndrome of Deficiency of the Liver and Kidney
Main Symptoms and Signs: Dim eyesight, metamorphopsia, glass membrane wart and pigmentary disturbance in mucula; neonatal vessels in choroid; accompanied by the general symptoms of dizziness, tinnitus, lassitude in loin and legs; blackish tongue with thin coating and thready thin or thin unsmooth pulse.
Therapeutic Method: Nourishing the liver and kidney to improve vision.
2. Syndrome of Asthenia of Spleen Qi
Main Symptoms and Signs: The same ocular symptoms as the above one, accompanied by the general symptoms of mental fatigue, lassitude, loss of appetite, short breath and no desire to speak; whitish tongue with thin coating and thready thin pulse.
Therapeutic Method: Nourishing spleen qi.
3. Syndrome of Accumulation of Endogenous Phlegm-dampness
Main Symptoms and Signs: Exudative degeneration of macula in fundus examination, accompanied by the general symptoms of dizziness, tinnitus, short breath, palpitation, obesity physique and massive sputum; whitish smooth or yellowish greasy tongue coating and thready slippery pulse.
Therapeutic Method: Removing phlegm and dampness.
4. Syndrome of Hemorrhage due to Blood Heat
Main Symptoms and Signs; In addition to the above ocular symptoms, others including hemorrhage of macula and general accompanying symptoms of dizziness, dryness in the mouth and throat, sleeplessness, dreaminess and constipation; reddish tongue and rapid pulse.
Therapeutic Method: Removing heat by cooling blood.
