Beta thalassemia minor is a disease in which the body does not have enough blood cells to perform various functions. As the name suggests, this is not a severe disease but can be controlled easily. Beta-thalassemia minor is also called as thalassemia carrier or thalassemia trait. The child will have thalassemia minor if any one of the parents has a defective gene. The child can have thalassemia major, minor or intermedia depending on the mutation or deletion of genes responsible for hemoglobin production. If the genes are deleted while the mutation process then the condition is termed as beta zero, or thalassemia major. Symptoms of beta-thalassemia minor cannot be noticed easily and also the symptoms vary from person to person.
Symptoms and Signs of Thalassemia in TCM are listed sa follows:
1. Pattern of Spleen and Kidney Yang Deficiency
Main symptoms: Pale complexion, poor appetite, abdominal distension, diarrhea, soreness of waist, aversion to cold, fatigue, belly agglomeration, light greasy tongue, white coating, thin pulse.
2. Pattern of Liver and Kidney Yin Deficiency
Main symptoms: redness in the face, tinnitus, dizziness, hot flash, night sweat, dry throat, withered nails, scaly dry skin, epistaxis, skin ecchymosis, red tongue with less coating, thin pulse.
3. Pattern of Damp-Heat and Blood Stasis
Main symptoms: yellow eyes, pale complexion, agglomeration in the ribs, abdominal distension, skin ecchymosis, epistaxis, bleeding from the gum, tongue petechia, white or yellow tongue, thin pulse.
