Symptoms of
Thrombocytopenia in western medicine
Thrombocytopenia is an abnormally low level of platelets in the blood. Platelets are made by the bone marrow. They help your blood to clot. People with thrombocytopenia can have excessive bleeding.
This condition can occur in varying degrees. The risk of bleeding increases as the platelet count decreases. Thrombocytopenia can occur alone. Or, it can develop as a complication of another disease, such as cancer or a viral infection. In some cases, it is a chronic (long-lasting) condition that persists for years. In other cases, it develops suddenly and dramatically. Usually, thrombocytopenia has no symptoms. But when you do have them, they can include:
Easy bruising
Abnormal bleeding
Bleeding when you brush your teeth
Pinpoint red spots on the skin (petechiae)
Blotches and bruises. You might have large areas of bleeding under the skin that don't turn white when you press on them. You also might see what look like the bruises you get from a bump or being hit. They could be blue or purple and change to yellow or green over time. The difference is, these are caused from the inside, by the sudden leaking from tiny blood vessels. The medical name for these is purpura. Severe thrombocytopenia can cause a lot of bleeding after an injury, such as a fall.
