TCM diagnosis based on syndrome differentiation:
1. Deficiency of Qi and Yin
Main manifestations: fatigue all over the body, low-grade fever, dysphoria in chest, dry and sore throat, insomnia, night sweat, red tongue, thin and whitish coating, thready rapid pulse.
Syndrome analysis: Deficiency of vital energy is the cause of fatigue. Deficiency of Yin is the reason of the internal heat, leading to dysphoria in chest, dry and sore throat, red tongue, thin and whitish coating.
2. Deficiency of Heart, Spleen and Lungs
Main manifestations: palpitation, shortness of breath, dizziness, poor appetite, pale complexion, thin and whitish coating, weak pulse.
Syndrome analysis: The heat produces blood and controls the veins. Deficiency of heart can lead to pale complexion. Spleen controls transportation and transformation, and muscle. A deficiency of spleen causes poor appetite and fatigue, tongue with teeth marks at sides. A deficiency of lungs is the contributing factor of extrnal infection.
3. Deficiency of Liver and Kidney
Main manifestations: dizziness and tinnitus, sore backs and knees, hot sensation in hands and feet, nocturnal emission, poor sleep, dreaminess, red tongue, thin pulse.
Syndrome analysis: The liver and the kidney have a common source. Lumbus is the seat of kidney. Kidney opens at the ears. Sleep depends on the coordination between the heart and kidney. Deficiency of kidney means the loss of vital energy, resulting in dizziness and tinnitus, sore backs and knees, hot sensation in hands and feet, nocturnal emission, poor sleep, dreaminess.
4. Deficiency of Spleen and Kidney
Main manifestations: pale complexion, low spirits, aversion to cold, laziness to speak, abdominal distension, sore back and knees, fat tongue body, light whitish coating, tongue with teeth marks.
Syndrome analysis: Insufficiency of kidney Yang may lead to low spirits, aversion to cold, while insufficiency of spleen Yang causes pale complexion, laziness to speak, and abdominal distension.
5. Exogenous Heat Toxins
Main manifestations: High fever without retreat, flushing face, thirst, faint crazy delirious speech, hematemesis, hematochezia (bloody urine), haematuria, red tongue, yellow coating with less saliva, slippery pulse.
Syndrome analysis: Exogenous heat is the cause of bleeding.
Diagnosis in western medicine
White blood cells are cells that are made in the bone marrow, and exist in the marrow, the blood stream, in lymph nodes and scattered thoughout our all our tissues. They are a family of cells which make up our immune system. Some white cells function as detectors or sensors of foreign cells or particles (such as bacterial, viral or fungal infection, or vaccines), and some cells function as ‘killer’ cells to remove foreign cells or particles. Another group of cells act to regulate this whole system so that the body only reacts against foreign cells or particles, and not agains its own cells. Haematologists can be asked to see a patient because of Low White Cell Counts, or High White Blood Cell Counts. White blood cell disorders such as leukemia that elevate your child’s white blood cell count cause changes in your child’s body that the doctor will recognize. These include:
Bruising
Enlarged liver
Enlarged lymph nodes
Enlarged spleen
To diagnose the condition, your child may need the following:
Blood tests
If your child's white blood cell count is abnormal, a pediatric hematologist will work closely with lab specialists and others to determine the type of white blood cell disorder and the cause.
Bone marrow biopsy
Doctors insert a thin needle into the bone to collect a tissue sample and then examine the cells under a microscope.
Additional tests
More tests, such as imaging tests, may be needed for proper diagnosis. In tests that involve radiation, specialists carefully monitor doses to avoid the risk of radiation overexposure.
