TCM Treatment for Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia that leads to increasing death and mental disability among humans. Current therapy of AD mainly relies on the use of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs) or antagonists of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs), which only relieve the symptoms of the disease but not halt its progression. Nevertheless, Traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) are highly prized as many bioactive components isolated from TCM are beneficial for treating AD. Here is a special formula recommended:
Ingredients: Radix Ligustici Wallichii (Chuan Xiong) and Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae (Dan Shen), 15g each, Semen Pruni Persicae (Tao Ren), Flos Carthami Tinctorii (Hong Hua), Radix Rubrus Paeoniae Lactiflorae (Chi Shao), and Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi (Xiang Fu), 12g each, Rhizoma Pinelliae Ternatae (Ban Xia), Radix Bupleuri (Chai Hu), Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chen Pi), Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride (Qing Pi), and RhizomaAcori Graminei (Shi Chang Pu), 9g each
Treatment in Western Medicine:
Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over a number of years. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer's, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment. Alzheimer's is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Those with Alzheimer's live an average of eight years after their symptoms become noticeable to others, but survival can range from four to 20 years, depending on age and other health conditions.
Currently there is no medicine which has ability to provide complete cure from Alzheimer’s disease but there are some medicines that can be used to ease the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. These medications are mentioned below:
1. Memantine
Memantine is research based drug for the management of Alzheimer’s disease. It is available with brand name of ebixa.Memantine increases the co-ordination between brains cells neurons and ease the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.
2. Cholinesterase inhibitors
cholinesterase inhibitor is a chemical which inhibits the acetylcholinesterase enzyme that causes degradation of acetylcholine, thereby increasing both the level and duration of action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Most commonly used cholinestrase inhibitors are donepezil and galantamine.
