Failure to be pregnant without contraceptions in two years after last pregnancy (including delivery and abortion) is called secondary sterility. Secondary sterility is usually due to improper care during menstruation and after delivery, or intemperance in sexual life and invasion of pathogenic factors into the uterus that lead to downward migration of blood stasis or damp-heat to block the uterine collaterals as well as the thoroughfare and conception vessels; or due to emotional upsets, stagnation of liver qi, disharmony between qi and blood as well as obstruction of the thoroughfare and conception vessels; or due to obesity, excessive intake of greasy and rich foods that lead to endogenous phlegm-dampness obstructing the thoroughfare and conception vessels. The conception of sterility in TCM is similar to sterility caused by salpingitis, endometriosis and immune disorder in Western medicine.
