1. Clinical Manifestations
Local itching, ulceration, redness and pain of the lid-margin are basic characteristics of the disease. Nevertheless, it shows different types because its main symptoms and affected parts are different.
(1) Blepharitis squamsa Hyperemia of palpebralmargin, adherent squamae at the eyelash base, easy loss and regeneration of eyelash.
(2) Blepharitis ulcerosa Hyperemia of palpebral margin, yellow crusts at the eyelash base, ulceration or bleeding or pyorrhea of the palpebra margin after the crusts being removed, easy loss of eyelash without regeneration because of the base injury.
(3) Blepharitis angularis Hyperemia, swelling and erosion of the outer canthus with a strong subjective itching; at severe stages, the whole canthus being involved.
2. Laboratory Examination
Usually diagnosis can be decided according to clinical manifestations, and the staphylococcus aureus or MoraxAxenfeld bacillus found in the Bacteriological examination may be helpful for the diagnosis.

When diagnosing a disease or a symptom, TCM doctors must follow the principle of "Syndrome Dfferentiation", and then "Suit the Remedy to the Case".
