Syndrome differentiation and treatment
In clinical practice, the disease is classified as the syndromes of severe wind-heat pathogenic factor, severe damp-heat and hyperactivity of heart fire. The basic treatment of the disease should be put on relieving wind, heat and dampness, accompanied by the external applications of eye lotions and ointments.
1. Syndrome of Severe Wind-heat
Main Symptoms and Signs  Redness and swelling of the palpebral margin with urticant and burning sensation, tightened and unsmooth lid-margin which is serious when confronting with wind, chaff-like desquamation at the ends of eyelash; thin whitish or thin yellowish tongue coating and floating rapid pulse.
Therapeutic Method  Removing wind and heat to arrest itching.

2. Syndrome of Severe Damp-heat
Main Symptoms and Signs  Redness and ulceration of lid-margins with a bleeding of yellow liquid or purutant blood, crust piling, tears with mucopurulent secretion, alternate pain and itching, sometimes with trichiasis and loss of eyelash; reddish tongue with yellowish and greasy coating and soft-rapid pulse.
Therapeutic Method  Removing heat and damp.

3. Syndrome of HyperactivitY of Heart Fire
Main Symptoms and Signs  Swelling and pain of the canthal margins with a burning and unbearable itching which is relieved by rubbing, bleeding and erosion of the canthus in a serious condition accompanied by small vesicles in the mouth and tongue sometimes; reddish tongue with yellowish coating and a rapid pulse.
Therapeutic Method  Removing pathogenic heart fire.
