Syndrome differentiation and treatment
In clinic practice, the disease is usually classified into the syndromes of wind-cold invasion of eye, wind-heat invasion of eye, excessive flaming fire of the liver, stagnant fumigation of damp-heat, and yin deficiency and pathogenic factors retention. Therefore, the treatment, in principle, should be based on removing wind and heat, and the specific methods of expelling wind, dispelling cold, clearing away heat and eliminating dampness should be respectively applied according to the severity of pathogenic factors. In the case of yin deficiency due to a long course of the condition, the method of nourishing yin to dispel pathogenic factors should be applied.
1. Syndrome of Wind-cold Invasion of Eye
Main Symptoms and Signs: Delacrimation of the affected eye at first, photophobia, obscure congestion, occurrence of punctate or dendritic cloudiness of the cornea, accompanied by running nose, fever and severe aversion to cold; light-reddish tongue with thin whitish coating and floating tense pulse.
Therapeutic Method: Dispersing pathogenic wind and cold.
2. Syndrome of Wind-heat Invasion of Eye
Main Symptoms and Signs: Photophobia and dacyorrhea with faint unsmooth or uncomfortable sensation, ciliary hyperemia, punctate or dendritic opacity of the cornea, or even grayish-whitish discoid cloudiness, accompanied by the general symptoms of headache and stuffy nose; thin yellowish tongue coating and floating rapid pulse.
Therapeutic Method: Removing pathogenic wind and heat.
3. Syndrome of Excessive Flaming Fire of Liver
Main Syndromes and Signs: Obvious ophthalmalgia, photophobia and dacryorrhea, ciliary hyperemia and bulbar conjunctival cloudiness, amplified and deeper corneal opacity in the geographic or discoid form, accompanied by the symptoms of yellowish-scanty urine and bittertaste in the mouth; yellowish tongue coating and thready rapid pulse.
Therapeutic Method: Clearing the liver to reduce pathogenic fire.
4. Syndrome of Stagnant Fumigation of Dampness-heat
Main Symptoms and Signs: Protracted course with the condition mild and severe alternatively and no recovery, dendritic or geographic or discoid opacity of the cornea, accompanied by the symptoms of carebaria, chest distress, yellowish urine and loose stool; reddish tongue with yellowish-greasy coating, and soft and rapid pulse.
Therapeutic Method: Removing pathogenic dampness and heat.
5. Syndrome of Yin Deficiency and Pathogenic Factors Retention
Main Symptoms and Signs: Prolonged course being recovered or onsetting alternatively, obvious dry and unsmooth sensation of the eye, mild ciliary hyperemia, or appearance of active lesion on the recovered scars; reddish tongue with little fluid and thready or thready-rapid pulse.
Therapeutic method: Nourishing yin to dispel pathogenic factor.
