Syndrome differentiation and treatment
The sthenia syndrome and the intermingled syndrome of asthenia and sthenia are the common ones of the disease in clinic. The cause of sthenia syndrome is, in most cases, because of either exogenous wind, dampness and heat or stagnated heat of the liver and gallbladder, and the reason for the intermingled syndrome of asthenia and sthenia is often due to yin deficiency of the liver and kidney. In the sthenia cases, the treatment should include the methods of dispelling wind, removing dampness, clearing away heat, detoxicating, cooling blood and dissipating blood stasis while, in the intermingled cases of deficient yin causing hyperactivity of fire, the treatment method should be to nourish yin to lessen fire.

1. Syndrome of Pathogenic Wind-heat of LiverMeridian
Main Symptoms and Signs: Acute attack with the ocular symptoms of dragging pain of the eyeball, photophobia, lacrimation, blurred vision, ciliary hyperemia, contracted pupil, opacity of aqueous humor dark and gloomy iris with obscure line, often accompanied by headache, fever and dry mouth; reddish tongue with thin yellowish or whitish coating and floating rapid pulse.
Therapeutic Methods: Removing wind and clearing away heat.

2. Syndrome of Excessive Fire of the Liver and Gallbladder
Main Symptoms and Signs: Besides the same ocular symptoms of the above syndrome, there often occurs blood coagulation between the black of eye and the iris, or hypopyon will be seen, usually accompanied by dry mouth with bitter taste and susceptibility to losing temper; reddish tongue with yellowish coating and thread rapid pulse.
Therapeutic Method: Purging pathogenic fire of the liver and gallblader.

3. Syndrome of Pathogenic Wind-dampness plus Heat
Main Symptoms and Signs: Urgent or slow onset with the same symptoms of above syndromes, or sometimes dim eyesight with the subjective feeling of dark objects moving about, often accompanied by headache, chest distress and arthrodynia of extremities; reddish tongue with yellowish greasy coating and thready rapid or soft rapid pulse.
Therapeutic Methods: Dispersing wind and removing heat and dampness.

4. Syndrome of Hyperactivity of Fire due to Yin Deficiency
Main Symptoms and Signs: The late or remission period of the disease with a dry and unsmooth sensation in the eye, repeated pain and swelling sometimes severe and sometimes mild, irregular posterior synechia of the pupil and dim eyesight, often accompanied by headache, sleepless, feverish sensation in the chest, palms and soles, dry mouth and throat; reddish tongue with a little coating and thready rapid pulse.
Therapeutic Method: Nourishing yin to remove fire.

5. Syndrome of Liver and Kidney Deficiency
Main Symptoms and Signs: The late stage of the disease with dryness and uncomfortable sensation in the eye, dim vision with the subjective feeling of dark objects moving about, contracted pupil and even opacity of the lens, often accompanied by headache, tinnitus, sleepless with dreams and aching weakness in waist and legs; whitish tongue and thready pulse.
Therapeutic Method: Nourishing the liver and kidney.
