The onset of the disease is closely related to climate and the external environment, and prevails in fall and winter. The incidence is higher in some cold and dry places. Abnormal high temperature and increased floating dust may cause the onset of the disease, too. Pathological changes of atrophy of mucosa may spread downwards to the nasal pharynx, oral larynx, and laryngopharynx, etc. The disease is called "Bigao" (atrophic rhinitis) in TCM. Its pathogenic factors are mainly yin deficiency and qi deficiency; its main pathogeneses are nasal loss of moisturization and nourishment due to deficiency of fluid, or nasal loss of nourishment due to deficiency of qi and blood.

According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, there are some patterns of syndrome that lead to atrophic rhinitis (AR).
    1. Syndrome of dryness of the lung due to yin deficiency
    2. Syndrome of deficiency of qi and blood
