Chinese medicine for cough related to emphysema?
Expert ReplyCondition analysis:
Emphysema is the irreversible destruction of the alveolar walls that reduces the surface area available for gas exchange and decreases the lung's elastic recoil. Decreasing the area for gas exchange would mean that proper oxygenation of the blood and proper unloading of carbon dioxide for discharge to the atmosphere cannot be achieved. The elastic recoil of the lung is necessary in passive exhalation as well as in forced exhalation. Reduction of the elastic recoil would mean that your lungs cannot exhale the carbon dioxide out properly and retain a larger volume.
As a result, people with emphysema often have difficulty of breathing and shortness of breath. They exhale thru pursed lips and often have cyanosis of the lips and nail beds. They also have limited exertion and easily get fatigued with minor activities.
Instructions:
1. Use herbal remedies to heal, soothe, and protect the lungs
Herbs can help heal, soothe, and protect the lungs. Ginseng, licorice, comfrey, garlic, anise, and fenugreek are suited for treating emphysema. A combination of wintergreen essential oil and eucalyptus essential oil make a soothing steam bath. (Eucalyptus essential oil can often bring temporary relief just by sniffing the vapors.) Basil essential oil, hyssop essential oil, and thyme essential oil may also provide good results.
2. Mullein is used to treat the lungs and symptoms of emphysema
Mullein tincture is a tried and true remedy for colds, coughs, asthma, emphysema, and other lung conditions. (Mullein leaves are thick and spongy like lung tissue.)
3. Treat emphysema with diet and exercise
Diet is especially important when treating emphysema and should include sea food, green drinks, and carrot juice. Vitamin E, vitamin C, beta carotene, B vitamins, and other anti-oxidants are useful supplements. Avoid red meat, caffeine, and dairy products.
