Nasal polyps are abnormal growths of nasal lining caused by chronic inflammation (which may be due to allergies, flu or sinus infections). They occur when the connective tissue matrix that keeps the mucus membrane linings of the nose intact becomes damaged. This damaged lining (which is no longer attached to the underlying tissue) starts filling with water, causing it to sag and cause a "nasal polyp".
Nasal polyps look like peeled grapes that are filled with fluid and can be found anywhere in the sinuses or nose.
If nasal polyps are large, they can cause a blockage of the nasal drainage holes, contributing to the growth of bacteria. This increased bacterial growth may lead to classic sinusitis.

Decreased Sense of Smell or Taste– Polyps are thought to be caused by inflammation inside the sinuses and nasal tissue. Along with this tissue inflammation, the huge size of polyps can prevent odor particles from getting to the smell receptors in the top of the nose. Taste gets a lot of its subtleties from smell and is affected as well.
