The source is from the whole plant of the perennial herbage, Cephatanoplos segetum (Bunge)kitam., family Compositae. The medicinal material is produced in all parts of China. Collected during flowering period in summer, dried in the sun. The crude one, especially the fresh can be used.
Medicinal Properties: Sweet in flavor, cool in nature and attributive to the heart and liver meridians.
Actions: Cool the blood and stop bleeding, eliminate toxic materials to treat carbuncle.
Application
1. For bleeding due to blood heat manifested as hemoptysis, epistaxis, haematemesis, hematuria, and metrorrhagia and metrostaxis. Because of its action of promoting diuresis as well, it is usually used together with Puhuang ( Pollen Typhae ), Huashi ( Talcum ), etc., such as Xiaoji Yinzi (Decoction).
2. For sore and carbuncle due to toxic heat, it can be used alone orally, or the fresh can be pounded for external application. The action of eliminating toxic materials and treating carbuncle is the same as that of Daji (Radix Cirsii Japonici) while the efficacy is weaker, so they are usually combined with each other.
Usage and Dosage:
5 - 15 g is used in decoction for oral use; 30 - 60 g of the fresh, just right amount for external use.
