Genital itching in either sex is an irritating problem that can simply be caused by allergies and skin irritations, or by more serious disorders and diseases such as Diabetes. In cases where genital itching is caused by irritation or allergy, avoiding exposure to the irritant or allergen may be all that is needed for the itching to resolve. However, other causes of the condition may be more difficult to treat or may require more intensive treatment and could ultimately lead to serious complications.

Diabetes and genital itching
Genital itching and burning can indicate a female or male yeast infection.
Regular yeast infections are a sign of type 2 diabetes.
In diabetes, blood glucose levels can go abnormally high, which can therefore provide ideal conditions for naturally present yeast to grow and also diminishes the body’s ability to fight infection.
Diabetes can also cause a higher glucose content in the urine – another extremely suitable place for yeast to thrive.

How can genital itching be avoided?
Females should take the following steps to help avoid genital itching:
-- After urination or bowel movements, wipe from front to back to prevent bacteria from the anus getting into the vagina.
-- Avoid chemical products such as vaginal douches or feminine hygiene sprays, which can upset the acidic balance of the vagina.

Males should take the following steps to help avoid genital itching:
-- Wash the penis well, including the area under the foreskin in uncircumcised men.
-- Keep the area dry, since moisture in the genital area can lead to infections.

Both males and females should take the following steps to help avoid genital itching:
-- Wear loose, natural- fibre underwear and clothing. Change underwear at least every 24 hours.
-- Keep the genital area clean and dry. Use mild soap and rinse well.
-- Use mild, unscented laundry detergents to wash your underwear.
-- Dry off thoroughly after swimming and after a shower or bath. Avoid staying in wet clothing for long periods of time.
-- Avoid unprotected sex, especially if you are worried that you or your partner might have an infection.
