Brewing in Xixia Dynasty
Xixia Dynasty
Mural from Xixia Grotto 3, in Yulin, Anxi. At the southern end of the east wall are two murals of brewing, situated symmetrically on both sides of a mural of a thousand-headed, thousand-eyed Avalokiteshvara. At the center of one picture is a cooking stove, on top of which is a multilayered stack of square vessels. In front of the stove, a woman is adding wood to the fire, which flares out of the stove. At left is a pottery wine jar. At right, another woman holds a bowl. Near her is a wine jar and a wooden barrel. Some investigators believe this to be the earliest depiction of alcohol distillation.
