Confucians Service to their Parents
Ru men shi qin was written by another major physician of the Jin period, Zhang Congzheng (ca.1156-ca. 1228) and edited by Ma Zhiji and Chang Zhongming. It was completed in the early 1220's. Zhang emphasized "attack therapy," the use of cathartics, emetics, and diaphoretics to drive out the pathological agent. This book, in which he provided a doctrinal and clinical basis for this emphasis, contains over 200 medical case records. The title refers to the obligation of members of the elite to care for their parents illnesses. There are many different versions of Ru men shi qin; this one is from Main Artery of the Orthodox" Medical Tradition, where the title is given to a collection of 10 treatises by Zhang and Liu Wansu; the original book occupies juan 1-3.
