Administration:

Actions:
Eliminating cool-dryness, dispersing the lung and resolving phlegm.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for cool-dryness syndrome due to exogenous pathogenic factors, marked by aversion to cold without sweat, slight headache, cough with whitish sputum, nasal obstruction and dryness of throat, thin and whitish fur, taut or superficial pulse. This recipe is also applicable to common cold, flu, acute or chronic bronchitis and others, which pertain to exogenous cool-dryness syndrome (or slight wind-cold syndrome). In case of headache and concomitant ache in superciliary arch, add Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae) to dispel pathogenic wind and relieve headache. If the patient perspires only after the administration but with cough unrelieved, remove ingredient No. 1 and add Sugeng (Caulis Perillae) and Pipaye ( Folium Eriobotryae) so as to enhance the effect of regulating the flow of qi to relieve cough.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is due to pathogenic cool-dryness in late autumn days, which results in failure of the lung to disperse and descend, and phlegm due to the accumulation of body fluid. Therefore it should be treated by relieving cool-dryness syndrome with drugs mild in properties, and dispersing the lung to resolve phlegm. Ingredient No.1, pungent and warm in property with moistening action, can expel pathogenic factors from the surface by means of diaphoresis. Ingredient No. 2, bitter and pungent and warm in property with moistening action, is supposed to disperse the lung to resolve phlegm. The two are combined to treat both the lung and weifen, playing together the part of monarch drug. Minister drug includes ingredient No. 5, No. 6 and No. 7, which function respectively to expel wind and descend adversely rising qi to resolve phlegm, and to regulate qi function.

Ingredients No. 3, No. 8 and No.4 serve as adjuvant drugs, regulating the flow of qi to resolve phlegm. Ingredient No. 9 is meant to mediate drug properties and to resolve phlegm and relieve sore throat in combination with No. 6. Ingredients No. 10 and No. 11 can regulate yingqi and weiqi, and mediate drug properties as well. So the above four ingredients act together as adjuvant and guiding drugs. This recipe, warm but not dry and diaphoretic but not drastic in property, is a representative one in the treatment of cool-dryness syndrome due to exogenous pathogenic factors. Simultaneously it is applicable to slight case of exterior syndrome due to exogenous wind-cold.

Cautions:
It is mild in its diaphoretic action and thus not suitable for cases with serious aversion to cold and aching body but without dryness of the nasal cavity and throat.
