Source: Shanghan Lun (Treatise on Exogenous Febrile Diseases).

Ingredients:
No.1  Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) 12 g
No.2  Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) 9 g
No.3  Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis) 9 g
No.4  Renshen (Radix Ginseng) 9 g
No.5  Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) 3 g
No.6  Dazao (Fructus Ziziphi Jujubae) 4 pcs
No.7  Zhigancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Praeparatae ) 9 g

Administration:
Decoct the above drugs in water for oral application.

Actions:
Regulating cold and heat, and dispersing accumulation to relieve fullness.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is used to treat syndrome of abdominal fullness due to intermingling of cold and heat, marked by epigastric fullness without pain, retching or vomiting, borborygmus and diarrhea, thin yellowish and greasy fur, taut and rapid pulse. It is applicable to acute or chronic gastroenteritis, chronic colitis, neurotic gastritis, chronic hepatitis, chronic cholecystitis and other diseases, which pertain to intermingling syndrome of cold and heat, and deficiency and excess as well with chief manifestations as abdominal fullness and distention, vomiting, and diarrhea.

In case of fullness and vomiting with mild state of qi deficiency of the middle-energizer, replace ingredients No. 4 and No. 6 with Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) and Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) to regulate qi and the stomach for relieving vomiting.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is due to deficient yang in the middle energizer, intermingling of cold and heat, and disorder of ascending and descending. It should be treated by regulating cold and heat, and dispersing accumulation to relieve fullness. Ingredients No. 2 and No. 5 are monarch drugs, bitter and cold in nature with the function of clearing away heat. Ingredients No. 1 and No.3 are used as minister drugs with pungent and warm nature to dispel cold. Ingredients No. 4, No. 7 and No. 6 replenish qi and strengthen the middle-energizer and serve as adjuvant drugs to warm the middle-energizer and regulate the stomach and spleen in combination with ingredient No. 3.

The last ingredient also acts as guiding drug with the effect of mediating the properties of other drugs. All ingredients together regulate both cold and heat and restore normal ascending and descending functions to relieve fullness, vomiting and dysentery by simultaneously using warming and clearing methods, descending and opening with drugs bitter and pungent in flavor for both reinforcement and purgation.

Cautions:
This recipe is contraindicated for those with epigastric fullness due to qi stagnation or retention of indigested food.
