Ingredients:
No. 1 Suanzaoren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae) 60 g;
No. 2 Baiziren (Semen Platycladi) 60 g;
No. 3 Dangguishen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 60 g;
No. 4 Tianmendong (Radix Asparagi) 60 g;
No. 5 Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis) 60 g;
No. 6 Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae) 120 g;
No. 7 Renshen (Radix Ginseng) 15 g;
No. 8 Danshen (Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae) 15 g;
No. 9 Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae) 15 g;
No. 10 Baifuling (Poria) 15 g;
No. 11 Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae) 15 g;
No. 12 Yuanzhi (Radix Polygalae) 15 g;
No. 13 Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi) 15 g.

Administration:
Grind the above into fine powder, which is then mixed with honey and made into pellets; coat the pellets with 9 - 15 g of Zhusha (Cinnabaris) after ground in water; take 6 - 9 g each time and twice daily with warm boiled water or with the decoction of Longyanrou (Arillus Longan). Or decoct the above ingredients in water for oral application with dosages in proportion to the original recipe.

Actions:
Invigorating the heart to tranquilize mind, nourishing yin and clearing away heat.

Clinical Application:
This recipe is indicated for mental derangement due to yin deficiency and interior heat, marked by palpitation, insomnia, restlessness due to deficiency, mental fatigue, nocturnal emission, amnesia, feverish sensation in heart, palms and sores, orolingual boil, reddened tongue with little fur, thready and rapid pulse. It is applicable to neurosis, schizophrenia, heart disease, hyperthyroidism and others, the chief symptoms of which are mental derangement with feverish sensation in heart, palms and sores, reddened tongue with little fur, thready and rapid pulse. In case of severe insomnia, add Longchi (Dens Draconis) and Cishi (Magnetitum) to enhance the sedative effect of this recipe.

Elucidation:
The syndrome is caused by deficiency of the heart and kidney, yin and blood deficiency, failure of yin to restrict yang and stirring up of deficiency fire in the interior. It should be treated by supplementing heart-qi to ease mind, nourishing yin to clear away heat. Moist in nature and with tonic action, ingredients No. 1, No. 2, No. 11 and No. 12 all possess the function of nourishing the heart and tranquilizing mind. Besides, No. 1 and No. 11, sour in flavor with astringent action, are the main components of this recipe, capable of restraining the loss and consumption of the heart-qi.
Ingredient No. 8 can clear away heat from blood to cool blood, relieve dysphoria and restlessness and enhance the effect of restoring peaceful mind. No. 6, No. 9, No. 4 and No. 5 bear the action of nourishing yin and clearing away heat so as to restrain yang and relieve dysphoria. Ingredients No. 7 and No. 10 can replenish heart-qi, and No. 3 nourishes the heart-blood to promote the tonic action of other sedative drugs. The last ingredient has the properties of guiding other drugs to exert their effects in the heart meridian and retain in the upper-energizer. Zhusha (Cinnabaris) is meant to further strengthen the effect of tranquilizing mind.

Cautions:
Most ingredients in this recipe are apt to generate dampness, therefore it should not be taken for a long time by patients with deficiency cold syndrome of the spleen and stomach manifesting poor digestion, and retention of dampness and phlegm marked by greasy whitish fur.
