Overview
Infantile Convulsion is a common pediatric disease of limbs tic, opisthotonus, lockjaw, and even obnubilation. Onset of symptoms occurs most often in age 1-5. Younger the child is higher the attack rate is. The disease can be classified into acute infantile convulsion and chronic infantile convulsion by acute or slow onset of disease, different states of disease. Acute convulsion is often caused by seasonal pathogenic factors, eating and drinking without temperance, or being terrified suddenly, which all can induce excessive heat stirring up wind, wind and phlegm congealing, endogenous liver-wind stirring up, disorder of qi activities. Chronic convulsion is often caused by invalidism pathogenic factor, deficiency of liver and kidney, endogenous deficient wind. Acute convulsion is treated by clearing heat and dispelling phlegm, settling fright and stopping endogenous wind, opening the orifices and waking up patient from unconsciousness. Chronic convulsion is treated by warming the middle warmer and invigorating the spleen, nourishing kidney-yin to store yang, softening liver to stop endogenous wind.
Treatment
1. Yingtang (EX-HN3)
Let the patient sitting or supine position, with routine sterilization, choose the Yintang(EX-HN3 )point, and needle horizontally at the depth of about 0.5 curt with 1 curt 30 gauge filiform needle, continuously rotate the needle in little amplitude, but don't lift and thrust the needle. Press the hole with sterilized cotton ball after withdrawing of the needle. Or press and pinch the point with thumb nail.
2. Shixuan (EX-UE11)
Let the patient sitting or supine position, push and press patient's palm and fingers from roots to tips let blood cumulated in fingertips. Then clench the finger. After routine sterilization, quickly prick the point with 2 gauge three-edged needle and squeeze out 3-5 drops of blood. (If the blood is dark red, doctor should squeeze the point with sterilized cotton ball to increase bleeding until blood color is normal.) Manipulate one finger by one finger.
Note
1. Acupuncture has good effect in treating acute infantile convulsion. It is important to reduce heat in the initial stage of disease. Treat chronic infantile convulsion should combined with drug. Integrate traditional and western medicine in treatment when it is necessary.
2. Acupuncturing child usually apply shallow puncturing, inserting and withdrawing needle quickly without retaining needle, for child's restless and low tolerance.
3. When convulsion occurs, let the patient lateral position and lay carbasus between maxillary dentes and inferior dentes to avoid the child bit his tongue. And cleaning the sputum in mouth to maintain respiratory tract patency and avoid asphyxiation.
