Bronchitis is an inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes, the airways that connect the trachea (windpipe) to the lungs. Bronchitis can be acute or chronic. An acute medical condition comes on quickly and can cause severe symptoms, but it lasts only a short time (no longer than a few weeks). Chronic bronchitis, on the other hand, can be mild to severe and is longer lasting -- from several months to years. The former is treated with herbs for dispersing the lungs and checking cough; the later with herbs for warming the kidney and strengthening the spleen and resolving phlegm.
Treatment
1. Tiantn (RN22)
Slow point injection with 1 ml 10% GS and 3 mg vitamin B1 can be applied on Tiantu (RN22) at depth of 1-1.5 cun.
2. Dazhui (DU14)
The patient is required to take sitting posture with head forward to his forearms on a table, and is punctured with 2-2.5 cun filiform needle on Dazhui (DU14) and manipulated till needling feeling goes upwards and downwards along the spine, then applied warming needle for about 10 minutes.
3. Shenzhu (DU12)
Taking sitting position with his head bending slightly forward. Shenzhu (DU12) is needled at depth of 0.8-1.2 cun with scraping, thrusting and lifting manipulation for a while without remaining needle and then cupping is applied on the same point.
Note
Acupuncture therapy is effective in soothing spasm of the trachea to check cough and is better to be treated with western medications and TCM herbs for those with productive cough.
