(1) Puncturing Shuilao (GV 25)
Technique: Shuliao (GV 25) is punctured 0.2 to 0.3 cun deep, with swift rotation. The patient feels soreness and distension in the nose. The method is for acute attack of asthma manifested as a shortage of breath and being unable to lie down.
(2) Puncturing Yuji (LU1O)
Technique: A one-cun filiform needle is inserted obliquely to wards the palm center, about 0.5 cun deep, and retained for 20 to 30 minutes after the arrival of the needling sensation. The needle is rotated once every five minutes. The treatment is given once daily. In case of an attack, the treatment is given at any time and Yuji (LU10) of one side is punctured each time, the two sides being punctured alternately. Ten treatments make one course.
(3) Puncturing Tiantu (Ren 22)
Technique: The patient is in a sitting or lying position with the head slightly raised. A 1.5-cun filiform needle is inserted perpendicularly 0.2 cun deep, then the needle tip goes to the posterior of the sternum downward, 0.5 to 1.2 cun deep. The needle is retained for 20 minutes when a tense feeling appears under the needle. The needle is rotated several times during retention.
(4) Puncturing the Sensitive Points on the Back
Technique: The patient is in a sitting position, with the back exposed. Pain, soreness, distension, numbness sensitive points are detected with the thumb pressing on the first and second lines of the bladder meridian. In each treatment, four to six sensitive points are selected and given strong stimulation. The needles are retained for 20 minutes. The treatment is given once a day, or twice a day in times of attack. Ten treatments make one course.
