The pathological location of asthma is in the lung, and related to the liver, spleen and kidney. In clinical work, asthma is divided into the categories of deficiency and excess. The excess is due to an invasion of wind and cold, improper diet, overeating greasy, sweet and fishy food, which results in a dysfunction of the spleen in terms of transportation and transformation, the production of phlegm that affects the lung; or is due to the liver qi attacking the lung. The excess type is manifested by harsh breathing with the mouth open and the shoulder raised, and is treated by the points in Hand-Taiyin and Yangming meridians, i.e., Dingchuang (Ex-Bl), Lieque (LU7), Chize (LU 5), Hegu (LI 4) and Shanzhong(CV 17) with reducing needling technique. Moxibustion is added for wind and cold type. The deficiency is due to insufficiency of lung qi, weakness of the spleen, stomach and kidney, and is manifested as asthmatic weak breathing, speaking in a low voice, lassitude, or more exhalation than inhalation. The treatment principle is to strengthen the anti-pathogenic qi, reducing the phlegm to relieve the asthma. The points include Feishu (BL 13), Shenshu (BL23), Pishu (BL20), Dingchuan (Ex-B1), Gaohuangshu (BL43), Taiyuan (LU9), Zusanli (ST 36) and Qihai (Ren 6), stimulated with reinforcing technique. Acupuncture and moxibustion are applied together. Bronchial asthma, chronic asthmatic bronchitis and allergic asthma fall in this disease category.
