Hiccup is marked mainly by short and frequent sounds over varying periods of time. In mild cases, it only lasts from a few minutes to a few hours. In the severe cases, however, it may occur intermittently for several days or even for several months. An upward adverse flow of stomach qi due to irregular food intake, emotional disturbances, or weakness of anti-pathogenic qi may cause this problem. Cold syndrome of stomach is manifested by deep and slow hiccups, alleviated by warmth, and with cold hands and feet. Heat syndrome is manifested by a loud and forceful sound and a strong preference for cold drinks. Stagnation of liver qi is manifested by its onset related to emotional disturbance accompanied by distention and fullness. Weakness of the spleen and stomach is manifested by a low and forceless sound, poor appetite and lassitude. Deficiency of stomach yin is marked by an abrupt and paroxysmal sound, accompanied by dry mouth and tongue, flushed face and nocturnal sweating. The principle of treatment is to harmonize the stomach and reduce the adverse flow of qi. The Back-Shu and Front-Mu points are selected as the main points, such as Zhongwan (Ren 12), Neiguan (PC6), Zusanli (ST 36), Weishu (BL21), Geshu (BL17) and Tanzhong (Ren 17). Other points are selected as the supplementary points according to the differentiation of the syndrome. Reducing technique is used for excess syndrome, and reinforcing technique is used for deficiency syndrome with moxibustion. Some Western problems, like diaphragm spasms, gastrointestinal neurosis, esophagus cancer, and stomach cancer, can be treated by reference to these methods.
