This disease is mainly characterized by sudden falling down in a fit, loss of consciousness, deviation of the comer of the eye and mouth,  speech debility and hemiplegia. Before the onset of the disease, the patient usually has such preliminary symptoms as dizziness and  numbness of limbs. The disease occurs when the patient is obese and  overeats greasy and sweet food that cause too much dampness  generating an accumulation of phlegm, turning into heat. The disease also  occurs when the patient has overindulged in sexual activities, or has been subject to overstrain and stress, leading to deficiency of kidney yin that further generates hyperactive liver yang. It can also occur when there are dysfunctions of zangfu organs, the preponderance of yin and yang and the derangement of qi and blood that are induced by worry, excessive thinking, anger and alcoholic indulgence. The disease is mild if it is due to the up-stirring of liver wind, the obstruction of the turbid phlegm and blood stagnation in the meridians and collaterals when the location of the disease is shallow. In this case, the manifestations are those symptoms of meridians and collaterals like numbness and paralysis of limbs. The type of disease is therefore termed "attack on meridians and collaterals." The treatment is to open and regulate meridians and collaterals, to harmonize qi and blood. The points chosen are Jianyu (LI 15), Qichi (LI 11), Waiguan (TE5), Hegu(LI 4), Huantiao (GB30), Yanglingquan (GB34), Zusanli (ST 36), Taixi(KI3), Chongyang(ST42) and Taichong (LR3). The disease is severe if it is due to the sudden uprising of liver yang that is mixed with phlegm and fire, creating rising of qi and blood; when the yin-yang balance has been damaged badly and phlegm and heat are misting the heart orifice, the location of the disease is deep. In this case, the manifestations are those symptoms of Zangfu organs, such as the paralysis of limbs, unconsciousness and aphasia. This type of the disease is thus termed the "attack on Zangfu organs." The attack on Zangfu organs canbe divided into tense and flaccid types. The treatment for the tense type is to calm down the liver and eliminate wind, clear fire and break phlegm and open the orifice. The points selected are Shuigou (GV 26), 12 Jing-well points, Taichong (LR3), Fenglong (ST 40) and Laogong (PC8). Treatment for the flaccid type is to restore yang to rescue the patient from collapse. Moxibustion with big moxa cones should be used on Guanyuan (Ren 4) and Shenque (Ren 8). Cerebrovascular diseases including cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral embolism and cerebral thrombosis belong to the disease discussed in this section.
