A hiccough is an extraordinary type of breathing movement involving a sudden intake of air (inspiration) due to an involuntary contraction of the diaphragm accompanied by closure of the vocal apparatus (glottis) of the larynx. A hiccough is also called a hiccup. Hiccups often start for no apparent reason and usually disappear after a few minutes. Rarely, hiccups can persist for days. weeks, or months. It is treated with herbs for harmonizing the stomach to restore the reversed stomach qi.
Treatment
1. Zanzhu (UB2)
Zanzhu (UB2) on the affecting side is punctured with 0.3-0.5 cun needle, manipulated with rotating method till there is soreness around the needled area and remained for 30 minutes.
2. Yifeng (SJ17)
Points on both sides are heavily pressed by thumbs for 3-5 minutes.
3. Futu ( LI 18 )
The right Futu (LI18 ) is employed and punctured with a needle till electric shock feeling appears along the arm and then kept for 20 minutes.
4. Danzhong (RN17)
Danzhong (RN 17) is obliquely punctured at a depth of one cun towards the bone membrane for 30 minutes.
5. Neiguan (PC6)
A filiform needle is punctured into left Neiguan (PC6) with stronger stimulation and then remained for 30 minutes after there is needling sensation around the point.
Note
Hiccup can be effectively treated by acupuncture therapy on single point, but for serious case it should be treated based on syndrome differentiation.
