Stomach convulsion, a symptom of gastroneurosis, is subdivided into pylorospasm and cardiospasm. Pylorospasm mainly manifested as pain in the upper gastric region; in the case of cardiospasm, there would be stuffiness behind sternum and difficult to swallow besides pain, and it is usually accompanied by nervous vomiting, poor appetite, belching, fullness in the abdomen etc. In TCM, this disorder is included in the categoric of "epigastric pain" and is treated with the herbs of harmonizing the stomach, checking adverse rise of qi to release pain.
Treatment
1. Banmen
Extra-point, at middle point of first metacarpus, just on the hump of short muscle of the thumb of the palm in radial side. A 0.5-1.5 cun filiform needle is inserted into Banmen on either side with reducing manipulation till there is needling sensation along the whole hand or upper arm, and then remained for 20-30 minutes.
2. Danzhong (RN17)
Danzhong is pressed by thumb tip till there is soreness locally, which is persistent for 2-5 minutes.
3. Liangqiu (ST34)
A fine needle is quickly inserted into the point, manipulated with rotating, thrusting and lifting method till the needling sensation is transmitted up to the hip and abdomen, remained for 15-30 minutes.
Note
Stomach spasm caused by gastric neurosis is usually cured after single treatment. As for secondary stomach spasm, its effect and therapeutic duration vary based on its primary disease.
