Syndrome differentiation and treatment
1. Deficiency of the Heart and Gallbladder
Chief Manifestations: Palpitation, restlessness, timidity, shallow and dreamful sleep, poor appetite, aversion to noise, white thin tongue coating, and thready and rapid or thready and wiry pulse.
Therapeutic Methods: To calm emotions, nourish the heart and tranquilize the mind.

2. Deficiency of the Heart and Spleen
Chief Manifestations: Palpitation, shortness of breath, dizziness, blurred vision, pale complexion, lassitude, poor appetite, abdomenal distention, loose stool, dreamful sleep, insomnia, pale tongue, and thready and weak pulse.
Therapeutic Methods: To replenish blood, nourish the heart, supplement qi and tranquilize the mind.

3. Fire Hyperactivity due to Yin Deficiency
Chief Manifestations: Palpitation worsened by strain, timidity, restlessness, insomnia, feverish sensation in the chest, palms and soles, dry mouth, night sweating, tinnitus, lumbago, dizziness, blurred vision, red tongue with little fluid, little tongue coating, and thready and rapid pulse.

4. Deficiency of Heart Yang
Chief Manifestations: Palpitation worsened by exertion, restlessness, feeling of oppression in the chest, shortness of breath, pale complexion, cold limbs, pale tongue with white coating, and weak or forceless deep and thready pulse.   
Therapeutic Methods: To warm and replenish heart yang and tranquilize the mind.

5. Excessive Fluid Attacking the Heart
Chief Manifestations: Palpitation, feeling of oppression in the chest, thirst without a desire to drink, scanty urine, edema of lower limbs, cold limbs, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, productive expectoration, pale tongue with smooth coating, and wiry and smooth or deep, thready and wiry pulse.
Therapeutic Methods: To activate heart yang, promote qi circulation and induce diuresis.

6. Blood Stasis Blocking the Heart
Chief Manifestations: Palpitation, chest distress, intermittent stinging pain in the chest, purple lips and nails, purple tongue with ecchymosis, unsmooth or slow-irregular or intermittent pulse.  Therapeutic Methods: To promote blood circulation, remove blood stasis, regulate qi and activate the collaterals.

7. Phlegm-fire Disturbing the Heart
Chief Manifestations: Paroxysmal palpitation easily induced by scare, feeling of oppression in the chest, restlessness, insomnia, dreamfulness, constipation, dry and bitter mouth, dark scanty urine, red tongue with yellow greasy coating, and wiry and smooth pulse.
Therapeutic Methods: To clear away heat, resolve phlegm and tranquilize the mind.
