Cervicitis is either acute or chronic. Clinically acute infection usually leads to cervicitis, a commonly encountered gynecological disease among half of the married women. Cervicitis is responsible for cervical cancer to a certain extent. It is usually caused by improper care during menstruation and after delivery, giving rise to invasion of damp toxin into the thoroughfare and conception vessels and affecting the belt vessel; or by constitutional weakness, dysfunction of the spleen in transformation, interior retention of dampness and impairment of the thoroughfare and conception vessels; or by transformation of heat from accumulation of pathogenic dampness, putrefaction due to accumulation of damp-heat and downward migration into the lower energizer.

According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, there are some patterns of syndrome that lead to cervicitis.
(1) Syndrome of accumulation of damp-heat
(2) Syndrome of exuberance of heat toxin
(3) Syndrome of asthenia of spleen qi
(4) Syndrome of asthenia of kidney qi
