Acupuncture Point Yangchi (TE4)
Location:
Pronate the palm; in the depression at the meeting point of the line passing between the 3rd and 4th phalanges and metacarpal bones and the transverse stria of the wrist. Or, on the radial side of the wrist, between tendons of musculus extensor digitorum communis and musculus extensor digiti quinti proprius.
Function:
Clearing away the heat and removing obstruction from the channels and collaterals, regulating the function of Sanjiao, increasing fluids for quenching thirst.
Regional Anatomy:
Skin-subcutaneous tissue-ligament of dorsum of wrist-between tendons of extensor muscle of fingers and extensor muscle of little finger-radiocarpal joint.
In the superficial layer, there are the dorsak branches of the ulnar nerve, the dorsal venous etwork of the wrist and the terminal branches of the posterior cutaneous nerve of the forearm. In the deep layer, there are the branches of the dorsal carpal branch of ulnar artery.
Indications:
Diabetes, malaria, carpal arthritis, influenza, rheumatic fever, tonsillitis, myospasm and myoparalysis of the forearm.
Prescription:
Combined use with TinghuiGB2 (Tinghui (GB2)) for treatment of deafness; with ShouwuliLI13 (Shouwuli (LI 13)) for treatment of radial nerve paralysis; with HeguLI4 (Hegu (LI4) Yuan-Source Point), ChizeLU5 (Chize (LU5)He-Sea Point), QuchiLI11 (Quchi (LI 11) He-Sea Point), and ZhongzhuTE3 (Zhongzhu (TE3) Shu-Stream Point) for treatment of muscular constricture of the hand and arm.
Methods:
Insert the needle perpendicularly, 0.3-0.5 cun deep; needling response: local numbness and distension, radiating toward the hand; moxibustion: using 3-5 moxa-cones, or mild moxibustion for 15 min.
