According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, fibroid is usually caused by emotional upsets, stagnation of liver qi, unsmooth flow of qi and inhibited circulation of blood; or by invasion of wind-cold-dampness into the uterus and struggle with blood; or by sexual activity during menstruation; or by insufficiency of the spleen and kidney, asthenia of yang-qi, dysfunction of the spleen in transformation, retention of dampness and fluid into phlegm in the uterus.
Stagnation of the uterine vessels and dysfunction of the thoroughfare and conception vessels as well as failure of newly produced blood to flow in the vessels may change menstruation or lead to sudden profuse uterine bleeding. Consequently anemia may be caused. So in TCM it pertains to the conceptions of abdominal mass, profuse menstruation and sudden profuse uterine bleeding.
Uterine Fibroids though are not without risk, the main risk involve in having fibroids are excessive bleeding and spotting between periods. The growth of the tumor reduces the chance of pregnancy as well as damages the reproductive organs like ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes. Loss of blood and anaemia is well associated with fibroids. It may lead to other complications like piles and pelvic pressure. If fibroids are hereditary in nature it may cause problems in pregnancy and can develop at any age.
