Causes of Lochiorrhea in TCM
Lochiorrhea is usually caused by weakness, exhaustion of qi with loss of blood during labor, impairment of the spleen due to puerperal overstrain, sinking of the gastrosplenic qi, weakness of the thoroughfare and conception vessels to control blood; or by excessive intake of pungent and dry foods after labor; or by transformation of heat from depression of liver qi that impairs the thoroughfare and conception vessels as well as drives blood to flow abnormally; or by invasion of pathogenic cold after labor, leading to cold coagulation and blood stasis; or by emotional factors, qi stagnation and blood stasis in the thoroughfare and conception vessels as well as abnormal circulation of qi and blood. The main symptoms are incessant lochiorrhea for over three weeks and distension or pain in the lower abdomen.
