There are syndromes of deficiency and excess in this disease. Syndromes such as obstruction of wind-phlegm, excessive internal phlegm-fire and internal blockage of blood stasis belong to the excess, while deficiency of the heart and kidney, and deficiency of the liver yin and kidney yin pertain to the deficiency. The secondary and the principal aspects and the deficiency and excess syndromes should be differentiated before the treatment is given. During the attack, the secondary aspect must be treated first, with the treatment focusing on eliminating phlegm and regulating qi, and suppressing wind and opening the orifices.
During the remission, the principal aspect should be treated, with the treatment focusing on notifying the liver and kidney, nourishing the heart and invigorating the spleen, together with resolving phlegm and dredging collaterals.
